FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96kHz  | Time – 00:56:39 minutes | 1.07 GB | Genre: Folk Rock

Recorded: 1999 – 2000

The disaster of Songs from the Capeman hit Paul Simon particularly hard, so he decided to quickly record a new album, his first proper collection of songs since 1990’s The Rhythm of the Saints — his first album in ten years, really. Nevertheless, if this album has a relative, it’s 1982’s Hearts and Bones, since it’s a deliberately low-key, insular record, especially when compared to the sweeping worldbeat explorations of Graceland and Rhythm. But where Hearts and Bones was a singer/songwriter album, no two ways about it, You’re the One illustrates the influence of its predecessors, but it’s not showy about it. The African and South American rhythms are as much a foundation of Simon’s music as folk is, and his compositions reflect it, boasting surprisingly tricky rhythms that carry through to his melodies themselves. That, combined with Simon’s determination to meet aging head-on, makes You’re the One a bit of an acquired taste, especially since its compositions are never overtly accessible and melodic — they’re all tone poems, driven as much by tone and lyric as song itself. This all results in a record that may be a little too deliberately low-key and elliptical for most tastes, especially since it demands full concentration even from serious fans. But this does reward close listening, and even if it doesn’t shine as brilliantly as Hearts and Bones (his most underappreciated record), it does share some similarities in that it’s an unassumingly intellectual record that feels like it was made without an audience in mind. Which means it’s more interesting than successful, but interesting can have its own rewards. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

On his new album, You’re the One, Paul Simon lowers the conceptual heat that typically surrounds his projects. After the South African and Brazilian journeys of, respectively, Graceland (1986) and The Rhythm of the Saints (1990) — and the foray into musical theater on Songs From ‘The Capeman’ (1997) — it must have seemed like the right time for a more straightforward collection of songs. “Somewhere in a burst of glory/Sound becomes a song/I’m bound to tell a story/That’s where I belong,” Simon sings on the new album’s opening track, and the comfort and command he displays throughout You’re the One demonstrate that he’s right.
Of course, “straightforward” is a relative term. Musically, the eleven songs here center on guitar-bass-percussion arrangements, with occasional keyboards, strings and wind instruments providing additional texture. In Simon’s way, the melodies are lucid, simple in the best sense of the term. The album’s overall impression is of quietness and introspection.
Direct as they may seem to be, however, many of these songs are not so quick to yield their meanings. You’re the One comes out a week or so before Simon’s fifty-ninth birthday, and age — not to mention marriage and fatherhood — has evidently done little to temper his unsentimental view of love and its elusive promises. Take what would initially seem to be the heartfelt declaration of the album’s title song. By the tune’s chorus, devotion unpredictably transforms into accusation: “You’re the one/You broke my heart/You made me cry.” Ever the cool observer, Simon shakes his head philosophically: “Nature gives us shapeless shapes/Clouds and waves and flame/But human expectation/Is that love remains the same.”
That expectation rarely is met, and the netherworld where unending possibility mysteriously disintegrates into inexplicable loss is Simon’s great thematic terrain. In “Darling Lorraine,” what the singer calls love is really a desperate hedge against his inner fears — and what may well be his murderous rage. Alongside a droning organ part, the trancelike “Quiet” suggests that death — “When the perfect circle/Marries all beginnings and conclusions” — may ultimately be the only deliverance from the maddening inner chatter of our anxieties.
But everything is not so grim. Over energetic guitar chords reminiscent of Buddy Holly, who gets name-checked in the song, “Old” has some fun with the inevitability (if you’re lucky) of aging. And the delicate ballad “Love” intimates that, despite our loneliness and panic at the prospect of abandonment, love is “free as air/Like plants, the medicine is everywhere.”
At times, Simon allows the power of his lyrics to disintegrate into abstraction. “The Teacher” and “Pigs, Sheep and Wolves,” for example, strive for allegorical richness but never quite achieve it. They’re either too obvious or too complex — it’s hard to tell which. But You’re the One can still take a worthy place in Simon’s esteemed body of work. This album may not lead you to the music of other continents. But it provides a map of the shifting geography of our emotional lives — the yearning vulnerability of our hearts, the intractable terror in our bones — and it’s all the more valuable for that. –Anthony DeCurtis, RollingStone

Time* Sex* Love* is the seventh studio album from American country music artist Mary Chapin Carpenter. It was released in 2001 on Columbia Records Nashville as her first full studio album since A Place in the World five years previous. The album was recorded at George Martin’s Air Studios in London.

The asterisks following the words in the title to Mary Chapin Carpenter’s seventh album of new material, Time* Sex* Love*, hide more words: the full title is “Time Is the Great Gift; Sex Is the Great Equalizer; Love Is the Great Mystery.” If that sounds a bit overdone, it accurately introduces a collection given over to big statements. After four and a half years, Carpenter weighs in with a 73-plus-minute disc that thoughtfully examines important issues. Songs like “Simple Life” and “Maybe the World” take on the uncertainty of life at midstream, a subject also addressed in specifically careerist terms in “The Long Way Home” and philosophically in “Late for Your Life.” But if that’s the “time” part of the record, “sex” and “love” take primary place. Simply put, the better part of the album consists of torch songs that depict romantic and sexual obsession. Titles like “Swept Away” and “Slave to the Beauty” reveal the theme, and even attempted recoveries like “This Is Me Leaving You” reinforce it. The narrator of that song sounds like she’d be happier singing, “This is me crawling back to you.” Working against the theme are the musical elements. Recording in Sir George Martin’s Air Studios, Carpenter harks back to the Beatles’ Rubber Soul for the album’s sound, which lightens the mood. And her singing never supports the victimization in her lyrics, always maintaining its calm, murmuring tone. But the point is unmistakable. It’s hard to see what any of this has to do with country radio, which, in any case, has been increasingly resistant to Carpenter. This album may not be a country blockbuster, ending the sleight of hand by which an artist who is essentially a folk-rock singer/songwriter has succeeded in Nashville, but it is a mature examination of life and love.

Chain Of Days“ is Silje Nergaard newest album featuring eleven diverse overwritings put together in an album with the melody in focus.
Silje Nergaard played folk, pop, country, jazz and blues in the new album Chain of Days, but all the music reflected the recognizable Silje Nergaard’s style.
It is surprisingly enough that Silje Nergaard felt completely free for the first time as a singer of the disc in spite of the fact that Chain of Days was her fifteenth album. Silje Nergaard invited a band to record music together with her instead of musicians recording separately behind a glass window in the studio.

Dear All, My new album is ready, released and I am excited! The songs are now all yours! I can’t believe that this is my 15th album … time passes so quickly. But, I’m just as excited as if ‘Chain of Days’ was my first release.
Each song has their own unique personality and little story, and I can now share them with you. I’ve also chosen to record a cover song, my version of an A-ha song.
The album was recorded here in Oslo with a group of wonderful musicians, all of whom I’ve known for many years. My two steady guitarists Hallgrim and Håvar are with me and in addition, I have brought my old friends in on bass and drums, trumpet and even a male choir….. yes, many beautiful musical colours. Still, the arrangements contain air and space – “Less is more” remains my musical mantra.
The album was released worldwide on March 16th. We will be touring in Germany in April, festivals in the summer and more touring in the Fall and Winter 2015. We will also be touring in the Far East.
We will be performing at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo on the 31st of May! This is my first time playing at this spectacular venue and it promises to be a really special night! So, if you ever thought about visiting Norway, this may be the right time – Norway in May is truly beautiful!
Looking forward to seeing you all, and please – take care. –Silje

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96kHz  | Time – 00:49:17 minutes | 969 MB | Genre: Jazz, Folk, World

Recorded: January 2013, Rainbow Studio, Oslo

The Half-Finished Heaven is the fourth ECM album from Sinikka Langeland, the kantele player, singer and composer from Finnskogen, south-eastern Norway’s “Forest of the Finns”. The music she has written for the ensemble here touches on, as she says, her “whole scale of expression”. Sinikka’s highly original and self-contained oeuvre is informed, in changing degree, by folk traditions of Norway and Finland, as well as classical and contemporary music and improvisation from jazz and other sources. Each of her gifted bandmates brings his own range of colours to the music.
This time around the ratio of vocal to instrumental music has been adjusted: after Sinikka’s first ECM recording (Starflowers in 2006), producer Manfred Eicher proposed a solo kantele album, “with three songs and the remainder instrumental”. The idea had to settle for a while, but proportions have remained, even as Sinikka’s writing for the project has expanded to embrace viola and percussion – and saxophone on some pieces – as well as her own kanteles (table harps).

Much of Sinikka’s work addresses the natural world, and our place in it, and on The Half-Finished Heaven, she chose to develop music expressing “the mystery and joy of everyday encounters with animals in the forest”. For three pieces she sets texts of Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, which in their own way speak of the transformative power of nature. “Despondency breaks off its course. / Anguish breaks off its course. / The vulture breaks off its flight. /The eager light streams out. …” The sung poems, reflecting the changing seasons, suggest a frame in which the music can unfold, with its melodic and rhythmic suggestion of animal movements, from scurryings in the undergrowth to the slow arcing of wings in the sky. Amongst the compositions, Sinikka integrates a very early and previously unrecorded piece, “The White Burden”, which she wrote in 1978, newly arranged for viola and kantele. “Together with ‘Caw of the Crane’ it has some sacral feelings connected to loss and sorrow and contributes to the space in which the creatures are flying, singing and running.”
Sinikka, who has proselytized for the work of other writers who have spoken directly of the natural world (see for instance the fine poems of Hans Børli set to music on Starflowers), says that she came late to Tranströmer, reading his Den stora gåtan (The Great Enigma) in 2004 and the Collected Poems in 2005. As she prepared the music for The Half-Finished Heaven in 2011, the news of Tranströmer’s Nobel Prize win broke.
“I was so happy for him but also a little worried that it would be difficult to make contact and get permissions for setting the poems. But his wife Monica called me and I got such a warm stream of positive answers and support from them, right in the middle of their most busy time.” In Tranströmer’s writing Langeland responds to “his painting of the big questions of humanity and nature with small brushes and his pointing to the life-spirit in everything, lifting up the mystery in normal things and everyday moments. His poems can be consoling, like religious parables…”

» Jean Rouaud, Prix Goncourt 1990.

When Tony Furtado comes to the studio, we’re always in store for welcome surprises. He’s a master on slide guitar and banjo. For this session, Tony brought in a cello-banjo, a much lower-pitched instrument than a regular banjo. You can hear it on several songs. Check out Track 2, Jo Jo, to hear what a cello-banjo sounds like.
On this album Tony makes his Blue Coast Records vocal debut. Of his vocal songs, we especially like the lead off track, Runnin’ Down A Dream. This is a Tom Petty song that Tony puts his own twists and turns on.
These songs were all recorded live by Cookie Marenco at Blue Coast Studios using the E.S.E. (Extended Sound Environment) technique. No headphones were used in recording and no overdubs were made. We used Neumann mics, Millennia preamps and our own Silver Cable recording direct to DSD.

Recorded: 1973, A&R Studio, N.Y.C.

Phoebe Snow died at the age of 60, but her art will live forever. Her debut album witnesses a masterful nine-track lineup. Most of the songs were written by a 23-year old Phoebe Snow, including her best-known smash hit “Poetry Man. Snow was renowned for her elastic contralto and jazz scat vocals; this album became as legendary as her career, which spanned decades.

It’s been said many times that being difficult to categorize or pigeonhole can be the kiss of death commercially, and no one bears that out more than Phoebe Snow — a pearl of a singer who never caught on because she simply didn’t fit neatly into any one category. Known primarily for her haunting single “Poetry Man,” this self-titled classic (which was recorded in 1973 and released on LP in 1974) found the earthy vocalist drawing on everything from folk and pop to soul, jazz, and blues. If anyone has bridged the gap between Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin, it’s Snow, who is as confident on the soul-influenced “Good Times” as she is on the introspective jazz offering “Harpo’s Blues.” In fact, many of the players backing Snow are jazzmen, including cool jazz great Zoot Sims (tenor sax) and piano legend Teddy Wilson. With as many risks as she takes, the album is generally quite accessible. –Alex Henderson

Flairck ‎- Live In Amsterdam
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC + cue | 24bit/96kHz  | 1,77 Gb

This is a ‘nostalgia trip’ for me, since the band was founded in the second half of the Seventies I have seen fellow Dutchmen Flairck at least 10 times during the tours of the albums Variaties Op Een Dame (1978), Gevecht Met De Engel (1980) and Circus (1981), mainly in the wonderful venue Diligensia in my hometown The Hague. Every concert was a captivating and adventurous musical journey with virtuosic skills on a wide range of instruments and .. some fine Dutch humor (the Belgians can also enjoy it). This live 2-LP (1980) is a perfect registration of the Flairck sound featuring many exciting improvisations and extended solo work. The one moments you hear warm 12-string guitars and soaring flute, the other moment propulsive acoustic rhythm guitar and powerful acoustic bass, blended with swirling panflute (very omnipresent) or violin. The one moment it’s folk (from Celtic to Eastern Europe), the other moment jazz, classical or a blend of several styles with lots of shifting moods and great solos on many instruments. The great thing about Flairck is that the skills are from excellent to virtuosic but the music contains a lot of emotion, it never sounds too clinical.

I still feel honoured that I have seen this awesome progressive folk formation many times on stage, I hope this era will be captured on a DVD. My conclusion: highly recommended and a good start to discover the unique Flairck sound in the late Seventies and early Eighties, later their musical direction changed, not always my cup of tea.

Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, Ale Carr og Nikolaj Busk has once again created new musical heights in the borderland between the styles of Scandinavian fiddle tunes and classical music. Since their debut EP Dreamers Circus, they have made a lot of projects including many concerts with the Copenhagen Phil and The Danish String Quartet, Kristian Leth (front singer in the band The William Blakes) a.o. which also set it’s clear footmark on this recording.
Kristian Leth says: “Their ambitious and youthful virtuosity is aced with that new connection, that old freshness”.

Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo – Almanac (2011)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88.2 kHz  | Time – 00:41:20 minutes | 834 MB | Genre: Folk, Pop Rock, World
Official Digital Download – Source: LINN | © veryone Sang / Linn Records
Recorded: Cherif Hashizume @ Café Music Studio, Bow

Within ‘Almanac’ there are stories of love, renewal, the importance of community and our relationship to the earth. Shadowing these lighter themes are darker truths of untold atrocities committed by settlers on indigenous Australians during colonisation, the mass hysteria regarding a Scottish witch-hunt, flourishing love and good old-fashioned heartbreak.

Although fronted by Emily, this is definitely a group album, with the four members of Emily, Gill, Jo and Anna providing guitar, accordion & flute, cello and violin respectively, with backing vocals shared out across the eleven songs. The quartet are joined throughout the disc by guest musicians who add a range of guitars, percussion and double bass, that add depth and drive to the collection. Emily is a compelling songwriter with a gift for melody and words. Her talent is perfectly complimented by the magnificent arrangements of The Red Clay Halo. Throughout the album, the interplay between the band’s rootsy ensemble playing, and Barker’s agile vocal blend of strength and fragility, is effortlessly engaging. In moments when the four female voices combine to deliver arresting harmonies, it is simply blissful.

Highlights include the dreamy textures of ‘Billowing Sea’, the nimble arrangements of ‘Reckless’, and the atmospheric lyrics of ‘Witch of Pittenweem’. ‘Almanac’ is a beautifully constructed and charming album, it certainly feels organic and natural, and the presentation of the songs is unaffected and with a real genuine air.
Upon its release ‘Almanac’ immediately attracted strong support from BBC Radio with sessions for Cerys Matthews on 6 Music and Radio 4’s Loose Ends, and single ‘Little Deaths’ was picked as ‘Record of the Week’ on Nemone’s 6 Music show. The album was also named ‘Editor’s Choice’ by BBC Music Magazine.

‘Almanac’ is the third studio album by Anglo-Australian quartet Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo. It includes the song ‘Pause’, the theme tune from the award-winning soundtrack of BBC TV drama The Shadow Line.
‘From the bucolic build that opens Billowing Sea, via the mournful strings of Dancers – which, again, treads a lyrical path to bodies of water – to the sumptuous climax of Bones, a song capping the album’s greatly graphical wordplay with talk of “a wound of a thousand cuts”, this is a dream of a record. So perfectly formed is it that, chances are, the listener will need to go around again immediately, to make sure they weren’t imagining anything’ –BBC Music Magazine

‘What should be obvious to anyone who listens to Almanac, whether they are a folk fan or not, is that Emily Barker is a confident and accomplished songwriter, and that still counts for a lot. These compositions have clearly been crafted by an expert in the genre. This means that there is plenty in the style and the content of Barker’s music to appease the folk traditionalists…What’s more, there is enough skill, emotion and beauty in Almanac to attract the more casual folk followers. Emily Barker comes pretty close to striking that tricky balance.’ –Drowned in Sound

Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | © Nonesuch Records Inc.
Recorded: Sound Emporium, Nashville, TN, July 9-12, 14–15, 2014; Additional recording at The House of Blues Studios, Nashville, October 12–13, 2014

The Traveling Kind follows the longtime friends’ first duet album, 2013’s Old Yellow Moon, which won Best Americana Album at the 56th annual Grammy Awards as well as two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show, for Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. The album also debuted at #4 on the Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.

Produced by Grammy Award winner Joe Henry (Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann), The Traveling Kindcomprises 11 duet tracks, including six new songs written by Harris and Crowell with co-writing by Mary Carr, Cory Chisel, Will Jennings, and Larry Klein. Also featured are new renditions of previous Crowell cuts including “No Memories Hanging Around” as well as new interpretations of Lucinda Williams’ “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad” and Amy Allison’s “Her Hair Was Red.”

Of the project, Harris comments, “In the words of Willie Nelson, ‘The life I love is making music with my friends,’ and there’s no better friend for me to make music with than Rodney. I can’t wait to get out there on the road with him and play the songs from this new record.”

Crowell adds, “Emmy and I wrote six of the eleven songs on The Traveling Kind, which was recorded in a six-day span with our Glory Band, Steuart Smith, and Billy Payne. Joe Henry was at the helm as producer and Justin Neibank did the recording. The experience was pretty much akin to falling off a log.”

A 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Harris’ contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008. Her most recent solo album, 2011’s Hard Bargain, debuted in the top 20 on theBillboard 200 chart and received tremendous critical acclaim—the Associated Press called it “gorgeous” and said Harris’ “silvery soprano is in fine form,” while USA Today praised “exquisite … her unmistakable soprano, at once grainy and ethereal, still wraps itself around a lyric with an angel’s delicate warmth.”

Crowell is a multi–Grammy Award winner whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Norah Jones, Etta James, and Grateful Dead, among others. His 1988 breakthrough Diamonds and Dirt generated five #1 singles and a Grammy Award for the song “After All This Time.” His critically acclaimed works The Houston Kid,Fate’s Right Hand, The Outsider, and Sex and Gasoline were followed by the 2010 release of his memoir,Chinaberry Sidewalks. In 2011, Crowell released KIN: Songs by Mary Karr and Rodney Crowell, which debuted at #1 on the Americana album chart and featured specials guests including Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, and Lucinda Williams, among many others. His most recent solo album, Tarpaper Sky, was released in 2014. Crowell’s honors also include an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award and membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

About the Mastering
Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.
In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

With his smoky baritone and lyrics about wanderlust, romance, and European boot leather, British singer/songwriter George Ezra offers up a 21st century pop take on the wandering young troubadour with his debut LP Wanted on Voyage. Though he cites influences like Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, Ezra’s music has more in common with the contemporary folk-pop of strummers like Vance Joy and Jake Bugg, with a bit of blue-eyed soul thrown in for good measure. Scrappy romps likes “Cassy O’” and his breakout track “Budapest” sit alongside quirky, synth-laden indie pop tunes like “Stand by Your Gun” and moody dirges like “Spectacular Rival,” offering up enough diversity to keep things interesting. ~ Timothy Monger

Sundown is Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot’s 10th studio album, originally released in 1974. The record made it to the number one spot in the US, his only record to make it to the top spot.

Lightfoot’s commercial peak came with this album, which topped the US charts, containing both the #1 title song and the Top 10 hit “Carefree Highway.” But songs like “Somewhere U.S.A.” and “High and Dry” are textured, catchy folk/rock on a par with the better known tunes.

David Kidman, fRoots, August/September 2009:
The latest album from Allan, his 20th, is heralded as showing a return to the more folk-inflected style of troubadour song that characterised his earlier years. Whatever, Allan remains the consummate craftsman-in-song, and he hasn’t in any way abandoned the key themes and concerns that he’s developed and made very much his own over a long and illustrious career. Leaving at Dawn is absolutely quintessential Allan Taylor, instantly recognisable for its telling combination of a uniquely expressive, warm and inviting vocal delivery and an attractive, precisely captured instrumental backing, centred as ever around Allan’s own intricately moulded and mellifluous guitar playing. But it’s also the product of an artist of total maturity and integrity, delivering work of the highest self-imposed standards and exhibiting (in every single aspect of its presentation) supreme confidence without complacency.
This new batch of songs was written(with just one 1993 exception) between 2001 and 2007, each one a prime example of Allan’s second-nature ability to directly share his emotions in simple yet always profoundly literate language, thereby taking the listener on a journey that feels personal yet contains universal truths aplenty. Allan’s musings are affectionate and eloquent, yet often more complex than they appear, primarily because they’re shot through with the perceptiveness and realism that are the hallmarks of a true observer.
Leaving At Dawn is full of songs that follow the songwriter’s eternal preoccupation, reflection with regret, either musing sensitively on love (Lay Soft On Your Pillow, Back Home To You) or embodying a strong sense of genius-loci (Provence, New York In The Seventies), often memorably bringing together both strands in the same song. Especially beguiling here are two songs in traditional vein (Firefly, already celebrated in Tom McConville’s fabulous recording, and The Last Of The Privateers), The Almost Man (a chokingly pertinent tribute to Allan’s father), and Winter (a beautiful and masterfully poetic expression of tender reassurance), while Red On Green is Allan’s own translation of a poignant song of farewell composed by Massimo Bubola based on a WW1 love-letter written my Massimo’s uncle.
The disc’s exceptional, state-of-the-art recording draws you in right close, with Allan’s very special and intimate delivery cocooned by the immaculately judged and empathic contributions of a handful of other musicians (guitar, dobro, accordion, banjo, bowed psaltery, fretless bass). I feel sure that Leaving At Dawn will come to be judged as one of Allan’s finest ever collections.

Nigel Schofield, The Living Tradition:
Everything about this CD declares quality and consideration. Recorded with stunning digital clarity and released on SACD (don’t worry, it plays on your old CD player), it is packaged in a new design of durable jewel case and features a cover shot which is a little work of art in itself [‘delicate – looks like Vermeer”].
This collection of a dozen new songs is contemplative and elegantly crafted. While many of the songs here are reflective – a meditation brought on by the passing of his father, a translation of a lost soldier’s letter home, New York In The Seventies which does what it says on tin, several songs of discreet departure -, the overall mood is of optimism and possibility: “Let’s get on the road and follow that golden star” is the ultimate response to the arrival of the urn containing his father’s ashes.
What slips by almost unnoticed on first hearing is the narrative power of most of the songs here: they certainly evoke a time; they clearly depict specific situations; but they also subtly tell a story – one reaches the end of a song, having, as it were, enjoyed the view, wondering how you got to where you now are. By the time you’ve figured what’s happening, you’re hit with The Last Of the Privateers – a full-on narrative ballad.
Allan Taylor has always had that felicitous skill of making you want to listen to his latest album – rather than it simply prompting a return to earlier work. Here, it is not just the quality of the writing and singing which draws you back to the CD, but also the spacious, acoustic settings: they are rooted in folk music and are richly textured – among the instruments one hears accordion, banjo, fiddle, cor anglais, bowed psaltery, fiddle, viola, a looping fretless bass and, of course, magnificent rolling acoustic guitars. It is, in short, an acoustic treat.
Speaking of the album’s folk influence, one must quote Allan’s note on the tradition-based Firefly: “Many of the finest songs I know are from the tradition and the British Isles and Ireland are graced with some of the most beautiful and powerful songs in the English language.” Some of the finest songs you’ll hear this year on this CD. To steal a line from The Almost Man, “he’ll smile and say, ‘You did it, Al’ ”.

Beoga – Live At Stockfisch Studio – Stockfisch Records stereo-only SACD SFR 357.4053.2, 49:56 *****:

(Liam Bradley – piano, keys; Niamh Dunne – Lead Vocal, fiddle; Eamon Murray – bodhran; Damian McKee – button accordion; Sean Og Graham – button accordion, guitar, backing vocals)

When Beoga (Irish word for lively) formed their ensemble in 2002, traditional Irish music was rocked onto its heels. Combining Celtic based contexts with furious infusions of jazz, folk and vigorous swing, the band assimilated into the world music culture with bravado. The release of their debut album, A Lovely Place, garnered both critical and popular acclaim. The core group of Liam Bradley, Eammon Murray, Damian McKee and Sean Og Graham, was expanded in 2005 with the addition of Niamh Dunne. A second album, Mischief, catapulted the group to stardom. Television and radio concerts globalized their fame. Their youthful exuberance and incendiary nature of their music have created a devoted fan base and worldwide respect.

Live At Stockfish Studio is a riveting, eloquent, thirteen song performance. While steeped in traditional music, this group shatters any preconceived notions. The set opens with “Trolleyed”, as a fast paced accordion opening leads into a jazzy swing romp. Piano (Liam Bradley), guitar and fiddle join in unison with tempo accents and stops. The utilization of dual button accordions (Damian McKee, Sean Og Graham) is scintillating on “Boxy Set”, unleashing a rhythmic tempest against the steady bodhran percussion. The band is extremely cohesive. On “The Prelude Polkas” they soar through an assortment of tempos and jazzy nuances. A change of pace like “The Solid Man” shows a layered, acoustic resonance, highlighted by lyrical entwinement of guitar and violin.

The aesthetics are enhanced by the ethereal vocals of Niamh Dunne. “Factory Girl”, a traditional American piece, is set in motion with a nimble introduction by Graham’s guitar, seamlessly meshing with Eamon Murray’s bodhran. The poignant voice of Dunne is emotive, reflecting the despair of industrial labor. Graham backing vocals complement the lead voice. Sentimental narrative underscores “A Delicate Thing”, as the working class protagonists are redeemed by love. “Both Sides The Tweed” gives the band a traditional format, emphasizing their Celtic roots.

Two engaging covers provide a different template for the group. Steely Dan’s “Dirty Work” receives a faithful adaptation. Dunne’s singing is a deft vehicle for the weary refrain of tenuous romance. The band sparkles on the jazz standard, “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone”. A spirited “jug” arrangement frames the breezy vocals in a relaxed setting, spurred on by McKee’s bouncy runs.

Stockfisch has reproduced the live feel of this extraordinary group with great precision. The separation of the instrumentation (especially between guitar and violin, and accordions) eliminates the occasional dint of live recording. The balance of the sound seems proportionate. Vocals never impinge on the music, and vice versa.

Live At Stockfisch Studio is a towering achievement. audiophile audition

Hirundo Maris is Latin for “sea swallow” and, like that bird’s flight, harpist Arianna Savall’s quintet – part early music ensemble, part folk group – drifts on musical currents between Norway and Catalonia, and adds its own songs, created on the wing. Savall and co-leader Petter Udland Johansen have shaped a band with a bright, glistening timbral blend, capped by Arianna’s ice-clear voice, well-equipped to address songs of the north and the south.

Hirundo Maris is dedicated to the memory of Montserrat Figueras, the legendary advocate, researcher, and performer of Renaissance and Baroque music, particularly that of the Mediterranean basin, who died in 2011, after the album was recorded but before it was released. It features her daughter, singer and harpist Arianna Savall, in arrangements of folk repertoire from the Catalan, Sephardic, Norwegian, and Scottish traditions. The title, Latin for Sea Swallow, refers to the centrality of the sea in all these traditions, and its subtitle, “Songs of South and North,” to the connections between the traditions that sea facilitated, connections that are evident in the similarities between the songs. Savall and singer Petter Udland Johansen, who also plays a Hardanger fiddle and mandolin, made most of the arrangements, and are joined by Sveinung Lilleheier, guitar, dobro, and voice; Miquel Àngel Cordero, double bass and voice; and David Mayoral, percussion and voice.
Savall has a pleasing, sweet, pure voice, not as expansive or as penetrating as that of her mother (to whom she bears a striking physical resemblance), but especially well suited to this folk-style repertoire. She and the other singers perform these evocative, melancholy songs with clear, focused tone and terrific intonation, and with the unmannered directness of folk singers. The tone of most of the songs is understated but poignantly yearning, and that mood is beautifully expressed in the delicacy and sensitivity of the performances. The accompaniments are lovely and simple but sophisticated; they reflect Savall’s lifetime exposure to her parents’ disciplined and lively approaches to early music interpretation and its relation to folk traditions. The sound of the ECM New Series album, produced by Manfred Eicher, is characteristically immaculate and natural. The recording should appeal not only to fans of international folk music but of historically informed performances of early vocal music for which Savall’s family is famous. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Eddins

Leonard Cohen releases Can’t Forget: A Souvenir of the Grand Tour on May 12, 2015. The ten songs of this hypnotic album are Cohen rarities recorded on his recent, celebrated “Old Ideas World Tour.” Remarkably, this is Cohen’s third album release since last September’s Platinum selling Popular Problems which garnered four 2015 JUNO AWARD nominations and won for the coveted ‘Album of the Year’.

The songs on Can’t Forget have the immediacy, spontaneity, and thrilling intimacy of the best studio recordings made in the white heat of live performance and Cohen’s legendary soundchecks, in which he brings the colors of his virtuoso band to full bloom in harmony with his voice, never more seductive. Here is a full range of Leonard Cohen’s work: new songs including, from the realm of blues, the wickedly funny “Got a Little Secret” and “Never Gave Nobody Trouble”; luxurious performances of such Cohen masterpieces as “I Can’t Forget,” “Light As the Breeze,” “Night Comes On,” and a sublime “Joan of Arc”. Cohen also treats us to a gripping version of the Quebecois love song “La Manic,” performed before a captivated audience in Quebec City, and a moving tribute cover of the late country master George Jones’s “Choices.” These are songs and performances of the first order that you can’t forget.

Cohen’s live concert tours were met with extraordinary and unanimous accolades as he performed around the world from 2008 through 2013. His mesmerizing performances totaled 470 shows in 31 countries, attended by four million fans. Can’t Forget gives listeners an extremely special glimpse into Cohen’s intimate rehearsal process, widely known to be in-depth ‘concerts before the concert!,’ heard by fans for the first time with this new record. Cohen continues to work with vocalists, musicians, producers and engineers who are the best in the business.

Can’t Forget was produced by Mark Vreeken and Ed Sanders, mastered by Bob Ludwig. Cover art by Michael Petit.

Multi-million selling world music artist Méav teams up with Grammy award-winning producer Craig Leon (Blondie, Talking Heads, Ramones, Pavarotti) to record folk-pop album The Calling.

Méav returns to her musical origins with The Calling, 12 tracks of newly written songs, folk ballads and fresh interpretations of timeless classics. Produced and co-written by the Grammy award-winning producer Craig Leon, responsible for iconic records by Blondie, Talking Heads, Ramones and Pavarotti amongst others, The Calling showcases Méav’s crystal clear voice, fusing her classical training with her folk roots.

From an early age Méav displayed an exceptional musical talent, immersed in Irish traditional music at her family home in Dublin. She went on to study classical voice, harp and piano while simultaneously studying Law at Trinity College. Her professional career was established with the Riverdance Choir, before going on to star in Lord of the Dance and embarking in three US tours with the Irish National Concert Orchestra.

This brought her to the attention of Celtic Collections who released three Méav solo albums including Celtic Journey with EMI, which debuted in the Billboard World Music top 10. In 2004, Méav was invited to be one of the five founding members of female supergroup Celtic Woman, who have sold six million records in the US and worldwide. It is remarkable that every album Méav recorded with Celtic Woman reached number 1 in the Billboard World Music Charts.

Méav left Celtic Woman in 2008 to start a family and resumed her solo career in 2010, performing to a sell-out crowd at New York’s Carnegie Hall. In 2012, Méav met legendary producer Craig Leon in Abbey Road Studios, London while working together on the score of a space film in collaboration with NASA. Despite their different musical backgrounds in pop and world music, they quickly realized that they shared a love of song-writing and ethnic music. This resulted in The Calling, a contemporary pop treatment of new songs and folk classics from Ireland, England, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia and America.

“Adds delicious wriggles to her renditions of traditional tunes”
